Amazon to open Hyderabad campus by 2019

Hyderabad: Amazon.com Inc. will open its biggest campus outside the US in Hyderabad by 2019, marking a significant investment by the US-based online retailer in one of its fastest growing markets.

Spanning 3 million sq.ft., the state-of-the-art campus will have “thousands” of employees managing back-end operations of Amazon’s various global businesses. The facility will also house a technology development centre.

David Zapolsky, senior vice president and general counsel (legal) of Amazon, declined to specify the number of employees who will work at the campus.

The Hyderabad campus will be owned by the US-based parent, Amazon.com Inc., and not by the Indian unit, Amazon Seller Services Pvt. Ltd, a spokeswoman clarified.

Amazon first established operations in Hyderabad a decade ago. Today, “thousands” of Amazon employees lend back-end support to the Indian unit and to business and technology teams across the globe.

The Amazon spokeswoman said there were “no plans yet” on moving all of Amazon’s Hyderabad offices to its new campus.

“Telangana has been home to our IT operations since 2005-06 and our presence in the state has grown multifold since then,” Zapolsky said in a statement.

“With a pool of quality talent, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a progressive government, the state was a natural choice for us to set up our largest campus in India here.”

The company also operates one of its biggest Indian fulfilment centres on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

An Amazon veteran who has been working with Amazon since 1999, Zapolsky said the company was excited by the “growth momentum” it is witnessing in India. “For Amazon, India continues to be one of our highest priority investments and we plan to invest with a long-term focus,” he added.

Zapolsky declined to reveal how much Amazon will invest in its Hyderabad facility. In July 2014, Amazon’s founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos committed to invest $2 billion in India to take on local rivals such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and PayTm.

Located in Nanakramguda in Hyderabad, Amazon’s campus will be spread over 10 acres of land located in the midst of different information technology companies.

Amazon will be the next door neighbour of Apple Inc’s upcoming technology development centre in Hyderabad and will be located in proximity of company Microsoft Corp., which has a development centre in a 54-acre campus.

Google Inc. is also setting up its biggest campus outside the US in Hyderabad. Construction of Google’s facility is expected to begin in May, K.T. Rama Rao, information technology minister of Telangana government, said.

Construction of Amazon’s new office will commence now. Rama Rao laid the foundation stone on Wednesday.
