The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has enabled the first export shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai, marking a major achievement for agricultural exports from the Northeastern Region. The one-metric-tonne shipment, dispatched on June 7, reflects growing international recognition of India’s premium GI-certified agricultural products. Renowned for its sweetness, bright red colour, distinctive aroma and superior quality, Tezpur Litchi is one of Assam’s most celebrated horticultural products. The fruit is cultivated in several popular varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, each valued for its unique flavour and quality characteristics. The GI tag has strengthened the product’s identity and enhanced its market visibility, making it increasingly attractive to overseas buyers. The successful export also demonstrates the significant potential of the Northeastern Region, which is home to a diverse range of high-value agricultural commodities with strong export prospects.

The initiative has delivered direct economic benefits to farmers, with growers associated with the export supply chain receiving nearly 10% higher prices than domestic market rates despite strong local demand. APEDA noted that the shipment underlines the growing acceptance of Indian GI-certified produce in international markets and is expected to encourage more farmers to participate in export-oriented value chains. Through infrastructure development, quality certification, capacity-building programmes, export-oriented production practices and market linkage initiatives, APEDA has been actively promoting agricultural exports from the Northeast. Working closely with state governments, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters and other stakeholders, the authority is helping integrate farmers into global value chains. The successful export of Tezpur Litchi is expected to pave the way for larger shipments in the future, strengthening the global presence of agricultural products from Assam and supporting sustainable livelihood opportunities across the region.
