Organized by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), a body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, the Organic Conclave-cum-Buyer Seller Meet was organized in Guwahati in collaboration with the Government of Assam to improve Agri-export linkages and facilitate market access for agricultural and processed food products of Assam. The conclave witnessed the presence of over 30 exporters, 9 importers, and around 50 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), thus providing a platform for business-to-business interactions to facilitate the stakeholders in exploring trade opportunities and developing long-term partnerships with domestic as well as international buyers. Assam has diverse agro-climatic zones, which are conducive to many high-demand export products such as Assam Joha Rice and non-basmati speciality rice varieties, fruits such as banana, pineapple, mandarin orange, and Assam lemon, and organic spices such as ginger, turmeric, and black pepper, which have a strong potential in the international market.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture and Excise, Government of Assam Mr. Atul Bora, mentioned the rich basket of GI-tagged and organically produced products of the region and the need for aggregation, certification, infrastructure, and market access to make regional products globally competitive while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers. IAS Commissioner and Secretary-cum-Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Assam, Ms. Aruna Rajoria, emphasized the globally sought agricultural products of Assam and the need for strong market linkages with the support of APEDA. Chairman of APEDA Mr. Abhishek Dev, reiterated the growth prospects for agricultural, horticultural, and organic exports from Assam, facilitated by farmer-friendly provisions in the revised National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and new Organic Mutual Recognition Agreements with Australia and New Zealand and Free Trade Agreements with the UK, Oman, and EFTA countries.
