The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), operating under the Department of Commerce, plays a pivotal role in promoting the export of agricultural products, including millets, from India. Supporting registered exporters through the Agriculture & Processed Food Export Promotion Scheme, APEDA extends assistance in Infrastructure Development, Quality Development, and Market Development. Utilizing platforms like Buyer-Seller Meets (BSMs) and video conferences with Indian Missions abroad, APEDA ensures export-market linkages, with state-wise millet export details for the year 2022-23 provided.
In 2023, designated the International Year of Millets (IYM), the Government of India adopted a proactive approach, engaging various stakeholders to promote Indian millets globally. Efforts included organizing events, establishing the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) as a Global Centre of Excellence, launching the Millets Experience Centre (MEC) in Delhi, and introducing a virtual trade fair (VTF) for millets. APEDA actively participated in international trade fairs, facilitating global exposure for millet products. These initiatives, a dedicated Export Promotion Forum, and a millet-specific web portal, underscore India's commitment to promoting millet and enhancing its global market presence.
