Ayush Emerges as One of India's Fastest-Growing Service Sectors, RIS Study Estimates US$ 36.92 Billion Economy

The Ayush services sector has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing service segments, with its economic contribution estimated at Rs. 3.19 lakh crore (US$ 36.92 billion) in FY25, according to a new study by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), released during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations in Nagpur on September 23, 2026. Based on a nationally scaled survey of 15,914 establishments across all six Ayush systems, the study found that the sector recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.91% since FY23 and directly supports 1.76 million livelihoods, with women accounting for 43% of the workforce. The study projects that the Ayush services economy could expand to Rs. 20.51-30.20 lakh crore (US$ 216-318 billion) by 2047, subject to the strengthening of infrastructure, quality systems, skills, digital capabilities and international market access. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Prataprao Jadhav, stated that the findings affirm Ayush as a dynamic, high-growth engine of India’s economy rather than merely a cultural inheritance.

Clinics and day-care centres constitute the core of the sector, together accounting for more than 71% of total revenue, with standalone clinics generating an estimated Rs. 1.54 lakh crore (US$ 16.21 billion) and day-care centres Rs. 96,205 crore (US$ 10.13 billion), while Ayurveda remained the largest individual system at Rs. 1.68 lakh crore (US$ 17.73 billion), or nearly 48% of sectoral revenue. The Ayush-based wellness segment, comprising yoga centres, spas and resorts, recorded a 21.29% CAGR, with yoga centres registering around 75% growth in revenue over two years. The sector generated an estimated Rs. 15,305 crore (US$ 1.77 billion) in Medical Value Travel revenue in FY25, with international patients accounting for around 5% of patient volumes but 15-25% of hospital-segment revenues; establishments with a dedicated website were found to have 3.6 times higher odds of attracting international patients, while NABH or ISO accreditation was associated with a doubling of such odds.
