Bangalore Metro took a significant step toward the future of urban commuting by unveiling the prototype of its driverless metro trainsets, developed for the upcoming BMRCL corridors. The 5RS-DM project will serve Namma Metro's Phases 2, 2A, and 2B, including the highly anticipated Airport Line. The prototype for the Pink Line was showcased by BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar, alongside BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy and other senior officials, who also witnessed a successful test run at the BEML Rail Complex. BEML, the Bengaluru-based public sector company, will supply 318 standard-gauge metro cars for both the Blue Line (Airport Line) and Pink Line, with all design, engineering, and manufacturing handled in-house.
This rollout is part of a Rs 3,177 crore (US$ 352 million) contract BEML secured through competitive bidding, highlighting the company’s growing role in India’s metro ecosystem, particularly in driverless (GoA4) urban transit. The trainsets will undergo rigorous testing and commissioning in accordance with BMRCL’s schedule, with comprehensive maintenance support planned for up to 15 years. In August 2023, BEML’s order for driverless trains began with 53 trainsets, later increasing to 66 sets, totalling 396 cars. Shantanu Roy described the prototype’s unveiling as a significant milestone in delivering next-generation mobility solutions for India’s cities. At the same time, Ravishankar emphasized that it reflects BEML’s commitment to supplying advanced trainsets that enhance the daily commuting experience for Bangalore’s residents.
