Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first airport in India to receive Level-2 Accreditation under the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (AEA) programme. This accomplishment places BLR Airport among a select group of global airports recognised for its commitment to integrating accessibility into its strategy, policy, and overall passenger experience. The AEA programme, which is the only global initiative dedicated to advancing accessibility in aviation, evaluates airports based on their facilities, services, and governance, acknowledging continuous improvements for passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs) and persons with disabilities (PwDs).

To secure this accreditation, Bengaluru Airport has implemented a variety of inclusive initiatives. These include the Sunflower Lanyard scheme, which supports travellers with hidden disabilities, and India’s first dedicated sensory room for neurodivergent passengers, providing a calming environment. The airport has also established a dedicated accessibility committee and ensures ongoing staff training to provide empathetic assistance. Chief Operating Officer of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), Mr. Satyaki Raghunath, commented on the achievement, stating that for BLR Airport, accessibility is a fundamental principle and a reflection of its belief that travel should be inclusive and seamless for all passengers.
