India exported more than 7,000 metric tonnes of makhana and value-added makhana products to over 20 international markets in FY26, according to the Ministry of Commerce. These markets include the United States, the Middle East and Africa, reflecting the product’s expanding global reach. Bihar accounts for nearly 85% of India’s makhana production, making it the country’s leading producer. Mithila Makhana, which has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is gaining international recognition for its nutritional benefits and versatility. Growing health awareness, startups developing value-added products and the participation of Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) are helping expand the sector beyond its traditional markets. India is the world’s largest producer of makhana, with cultivation concentrated mainly in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.

The Government of India has introduced measures to strengthen the sector and support exports. A separate Harmonised System (HS) code for makhana came into effect in July 2025, enabling its distinct classification in international trade. The National Makhana Board, announced in the Union Budget 2025-26, was formally launched in Bihar on September 15, 2025. In addition, the government approved the Central Sector Scheme for the Development of Makhana, with an outlay of Rs. 476.03 crore (US$ 53.87 million) for 2025-26 to 2030-31. The scheme focuses on research and innovation, quality seed availability, farmer training, improved harvesting and post-harvest practices, value addition, branding, marketing, exports and quality control. Allocations of Rs. 30 crore (US$ 3.39 million) for FY26 and Rs. 90 crore (US$ 9.47 million) for FY27 have been approved under the scheme. These initiatives aim to modernise makhana cultivation and processing, strengthen farmers’ incomes and expand the global market for Bihar’s GI-tagged Mithila Makhana.
