C-DOT Establishes Sixth Centre of Excellence at IIT (BHU), Varanasi to Advance Next-Generation Telecom Technologies

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the research and development centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, to establish its sixth Centre of Excellence (CoE). The partnership aims to strengthen India’s telecommunications innovation ecosystem by bringing together C-DOT’s indigenous telecom research capabilities and IIT (BHU)’s academic expertise. The CoE will provide a dedicated platform for collaborative research, technology development and capacity building in emerging communication technologies. It will facilitate joint research involving researchers, faculty, students and technology experts, while promoting knowledge exchange and developing skilled professionals for the evolving telecommunications sector.

The CoE will focus on wireless communications, quantum technologies, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven communication systems. Its research areas will include 5G Advanced and 6G technologies, very large-scale Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, Integrated Sensing and Communication, AI-native communication networks and devices, and quantum and post-quantum communication technologies. Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer of C-DOT, highlighted the initiative’s role in accelerating indigenous technology development and strengthening India’s future communication capabilities. Professor Amit Patra, Director of IIT (BHU), noted that the collaboration would help translate academic research into practical technological solutions and enable students and researchers to address real-world telecommunications challenges. The inauguration of the CoE followed the MoU signing ceremony, attended by senior officials and faculty members. The new centre expands C-DOT’s national network of six Centres of Excellence, building on existing collaborations with IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Roorkee, IIT Hyderabad and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, through Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID).
