The Union Cabinet has approved a 92 gigawatt-hour (GWh) energy storage scheme to strengthen India's clean energy programme and support the integration of renewable energy into the power system. The scheme comprises 30 GWh of battery energy storage, 60 GWh of pumped storage and 2 GWh allocated to emerging energy storage technologies. Briefing the media in New Delhi, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative would be implemented in collaboration with state governments to ensure an equitable distribution of energy storage capacity across the country.

The approval is expected to strengthen India's energy storage infrastructure and support the country's transition towards cleaner sources of power. Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that nearly 52% of India's power generation capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, highlighting the country's progress in clean energy deployment. The proposed storage capacity will add to the infrastructure needed to support the growing share of non-fossil fuel-based power generation and further strengthen India's clean energy programme.
