The Union Cabinet has approved the refarming of 687 MHz of spectrum for mobile services, with further plans to be implemented based on a study by a Committee of Secretaries set up by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, according to Union Minister of Communications Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia. At the COAI event, he highlighted that mobile services require 2,000 MHz of spectrum by 2030. The recent Cabinet decision increases the total available spectrum to 1,587 MHz
He noted that 320 MHz will be released immediately, with additional releases planned by the end of 2028-29. This step aims to prepare the country for the expected demand by 2030. He assured that the government would work to meet the industry’s needs and ensure there were no obstacles in India's digital telecom landscape. Despite this, he mentioned a remaining gap of around 300 MHz, with the second phase of spectrum refarming being worked on. The report from the Committee of Secretaries is expected by mid-2025, after which further actions will be taken to eliminate bottlenecks in the sector.
