The Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, adopted the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) on Wednesday. This Rs. 6,600 crore (US$ 802 million) programme supports infrastructure, industry, and other livelihood projects in the Northeastern states.
According to an official announcement, the new programme will be implemented during the final four years of the 15th Finance Commission, from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, and will be fully supported by the central government. It will be overseen by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Efforts would be made to finish the PM-DevINE projects by 2025–2026 in order to ensure that there would be no committed obligations beyond this year. This would entail front-loading the sanctions under the programme largely in 2022–2023 and 2023–2024.
While expenses would still be incurred in 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, there would be a focus on finishing the authorised PM–DevINE projects.
According to the announcement, the PM-DevINE would establish infrastructure, support industries, social development initiatives, and livelihood opportunities for women and young people, which will create jobs.
