Cabinet approves semiconductor unit in Uttar Pradesh

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of a new semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. This is the sixth such unit, with five others already in advanced stages of construction. The new facility is a joint venture between Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) and Foxconn, two prominent names in hardware development and electronics manufacturing. Located near Jewar airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), this plant will manufacture display driver chips for various devices, including mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and personal computers (PCs). The plant is designed to produce 20,000 wafers per month, with a 36 million units per month capacity.

The semiconductor industry is rapidly developing across India, with state governments actively pursuing design firms and setting up world-class design facilities. Students and entrepreneurs in 270 academic institutions and 70 startups work on cutting-edge design technologies for new products. Additionally, 20 products developed by students have been taped out by Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) Mohali. The new semiconductor unit will attract an investment of Rs. 3,700 crore (US$ 433.40 million). With the rising demand for semiconductors in various sectors, such as mobile phones, laptops, medical devices, and defence equipment, the unit will contribute to India's progress in semiconductor manufacturing. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, further strengthening India's position in the global semiconductor industry.
