Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN), with a total outlay of Rs. 24,104 crore (US$ 2.89 billion) (Central Share: Rs. 15,336 crore (US$ 1.83 billion) and State Share: Rs. 8,768 crore (US$ 1.05 billion)), has been approved by the Union Cabinet, which is presided over by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The programme will concentrate on 11 critical interventions through nine-line Ministries.
The Prime Minister declared the Abhiyan from Khunti on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.
"To improve socio-economic conditions of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), Pradhan Mantri PVTG of Development Mission will be launched," as stated in the Budget Speech 2023-24. This would provide PVTG families and communities with a wide range of essential services, including safe housing, clean drinking water, improved access to healthcare, education, and nutrition, road and telecommunications connectivity, and opportunities for sustainable livelihood.
In the following three years, the Mission would be carried out with funding of Rs. 15,000 crore (US$ 1.79 billion) from the Development Action Plan for the Scheduled Tribes (DAPST).
The 2011 census of India revealed that there were 10.45 crore ST people living there, of whom 75 communities spread across 18 States and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands were classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). There is still vulnerability for these PVTGs in the social, economic, and educational spheres.
