Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi inaugurated a metro project in Pune, Maharashtra and stated that the central government is working on boosting public transit, particularly metro rail connectivity. On December 24, 2016, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the project. The Pune Metro project has a total cost of about Rs 11,400 crore (US$ 1.48 billion). After unveiling and laying the foundation stone for several development projects in the city, he addressed a public meeting at the MIT College grounds here.

He said that the inauguration of the Pune metro project demonstrates and sends the message that projects can be finished on time, and he urged people to use metro trains. Noting that urbanisation is accelerating, he predicted that by 2030, the country's urban population will exceed 60 crores. Previously, metro trains were only available in Delhi and a few other cities, but the metro network is now operational or under construction in over two dozen cities across the country, he said.
