The Centre has launched two large-scale initiatives in the bamboo sector in the North Eastern Region, investing a total of Rs. 82.5 crore (US$ 9.2 million). The aim is to raise the level of living, foster industrialization, and promote sustainable development in the region. The initiative was launched by Union Minister for Development of Northeastern Region, Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, in Guwahati. The two projects aim to enhance the bamboo artisan clusters and promote engineered bamboo products for industrial applications. Both projects are aimed at modernization, improving tool and design capacity, and getting artisans into organized markets. Over 4,500 artisans are expected to benefit from the project through skill development and improved market access, and youth and artisans will be trained in advanced processing technology to enhance quality and competitiveness.
The projects are implemented by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) in close coordination with the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (MDoNER), the North Eastern Council (NEC), and key private sector partners such as Amazon India, Flipkart, and All Time Plastics Ltd. MoUs were signed to facilitate onboarding on e-commerce, cataloging, and market access to reach a wider audience in India and abroad. The projects are implemented in Karbi Anglong, Assam, and Mokokchung, Nagaland, to make bamboo a key driver of sustainable development, unlocking earning opportunities for rural and tribal communities, and solidifying the North Eastern Region as a hotspot for modern bamboo industries.
