According to the second advance estimate of the agriculture ministry, wheat output in the upcoming rabi marketing season (2023-24) is predicted to reach an all-time high of 112.18 million tonnes (MT), up 4.12% from last year, on the basis of a strong rise in the area.
According to the forecasts, the production of mustard and chana is also anticipated to reach new highs this season. The Centre will be able to control food inflation, especially in cereals, which increased once more in January, with the support of a good harvest of wheat, chana, and mustard.
However, the forecasts, particularly for wheat, rely on the premise that the standing crop will continue to experience favourable weather over the next few weeks and that there won't be any exceptional temperature increases, as there were last year, which reduced productivity.
Due to bad weather, the Centre pulled back its initial forecast of wheat production for the crop year 2021–2022 from 111.32 MT to 107.74 MT. The wheat crop from the previous year is sold the following year.
Trade sources believe that the wheat production last year was far less than 100 MT, which was evident in decreased official procurement and a rapid increase in prices throughout the year.
The second estimation put the country's largest pulse, chana (gramme), at 13.63 MT this year, which is 0.66% larger than it was around the same time last year.
Production of mustard, the main oilseed in the rabi season, is projected at a record 12.81 MT, which is 7.11% more than last year.
