The central government conducted 11 job fairs (Rojgar Melas) between October 2022 and November 2023 recruiting nearly 700,000 individuals. This initiative followed a commitment made by the Prime Minister's Office in June 2022, stating that the government aimed to hire a million people within the next 1.5 years. The directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized a mission-mode approach to recruitment, reviewing human resources across departments and ministries. The recent data reflects progress toward achieving this employment target.

Santosh Mehrotra, a visiting professor at the University of Bath, expressed scepticism about the feasibility of recruiting nearly 300,000 people in less than a month, citing the typically lengthy nature of the process. He emphasized that government jobs constitute a relatively small portion of overall employment and suggested a shift in focus towards revitalizing manufacturing and other labour-intensive sectors.

In response, Mr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister for the Ministry of Personnel & Training, stated in Parliament in April that job fairs (rozgar melas) were being conducted nationwide. New appointees were being inducted into various central ministries, departments, central public sector undertakings (CPSUs), autonomous bodies, and public sector banks. The minister highlighted that filling vacant posts is an ongoing and mission-oriented process managed by the respective ministries, departments, and organizations.
