The Centre has set a target of constructing 26,474 kilometres of rural roads in FY27, backed by an allocation of Rs. 18,907 crore (US$ 1.98 billion) under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and related rural connectivity programmes. The roadmap was reviewed in a high-level meeting chaired by Rural Development Secretary Mr. Rohit Kansal, who assessed the physical and financial progress of states under PMGSY, and the Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism Affected Areas (RCPLWEA). The review underlined the Government’s focus on last-mile connectivity, with directions to expedite completion of remaining unconnected habitations under PMGSY-I and the PM-JANMAN programme, especially in remote and tribal areas.
The meeting also placed emphasis on improving road connectivity for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) and fast-tracking pending projects through better preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), timely land acquisition and clearance processes, and stronger coordination with implementing agencies. Progress under the RCPLWEA was also reviewed, with states asked to ensure timely completion of sanctioned projects in Maoist-affected districts. In addition to construction targets, the Government highlighted the importance of durable infrastructure, quality monitoring and effective maintenance systems to ensure long-term rural connectivity. States were also urged to adopt the e-MARG platform more widely for real-time monitoring of maintenance activities, payment tracking and performance assessment. The Ministry said wider digital adoption would improve transparency, accountability and operational efficiency in rural road maintenance, while supporting the broader objective of extending reliable all-weather road connectivity to every eligible habitation.
