Union Minister of Tourism Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has urged the Indian diaspora in the UK to support the Chalo India campaign, encouraging more travellers to explore India's vast tourist destinations. Speaking at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, he emphasised the Chalo India initiative, launched by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi earlier this year, which encourages members of the Indian diaspora worldwide to promote India's diverse tourism offerings. He described the diaspora as key ambassadors for the campaign, inviting non-Indian friends to experience the country's cultural richness.
He also highlighted the government's offer of one lakh gratis e-tourist visas for foreign visitors under the Chalo India referral programme, valid until March 31, 2024. The event at the historic Cutty Sark ship in Maritime Greenwich aimed to promote India's tourism to the global Indian community. Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr. Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, expressed that the diaspora could be powerful ambassadors for India. The gathering featured cultural performances, including Bharatnatyam and Garba dances, and shared travel experiences by British Indian travel writer Ms. Monisha Rajesh. The event also marked the launch of a new Chalo India portal, which allows overseas citizens of India to refer up to five friends for a free tourist e-visa.
