On October 21, 2022, state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) said that it had begun the third phase of 17 more first-mile connectivity projects totalling Rs. 11,000 crore (US$ 1.33 billion)

The term "first-mile connectivity" (FMC) describes the movement of coal from mines to distribution centres.

The PSU is putting together a roll-out strategy that calls for launching tenders for the newest projects by FY 2025 and commissioning them by FY 2027.

When compared to despatch through rail sidings, the transportation of coal via first-mile connectivity has resulted in a significant reduction in particulate matter, CO2, and other gaseous emissions.
