Coal Sector Achieves Highest Growth of 10.2 % among Eight Core Industries in January 2024

In January 2024, the coal sector recorded a robust growth of 10.2% among the eight core industries, as indicated by the Ministry of Commerce & Industries' Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI). The coal industry's index surged to 218.9 points from 198.6 points in the corresponding period the previous year, contributing significantly to the cumulative 12.2% increase observed from April to January 2023-24 compared to the preceding fiscal year. The Combined Index of Eight Core Industries reflected a noteworthy 3.6% uptick in January 2024, underscoring the pivotal role played by the coal sector in driving overall industrial expansion.

This exceptional growth is attributed to a substantial increase in coal production during January 2024, reaching an impressive 99.73 million tonnes, marking a 10.20% surge from the same period in the previous year. The coal sector's consistent double-digit growth over the past seven months, outperforming its counterparts, aligns with the Ministry of Coal's proactive initiatives and reinforces the national vision of "Atmanirbhar Bharat," contributing to the nation's strides towards self-sufficiency and energy security.
