Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal addressed the National One District One Product (ODOP) 2024 Awards in New Delhi, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to promoting local products in global markets. Highlighting the contributions of 773 districts, he said that India is poised to become the third-largest economy by 2027 and described the country as an “oasis in a tumultuous world.” Mr. Piyush Goyal emphasised promoting first-time exporters, newer markets, and branding through strong partnerships between the Commerce Ministry and local districts. Examples like Wayanad’s coffee and Pulwama’s saffron were cited to showcase the diversity of Indian products. He noted that 64 of 87 ODOP items are now under the Industrial Investment Promotion Policy and that Bihar, with 100% product coverage, has been categorised as Category A. He also announced that 27 states will soon house PM Ekta Malls to display ODOP and Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged items.
The second edition of the ODOP Awards honoured 34 winners across districts, states, and Indian Missions abroad. Over 1,200 unique products from more than 750 districts were recognised, spanning agriculture, food processing, handlooms, and handicrafts. The ODOP initiative has expanded globally, with ODOP Walls in cities such as Singapore, Milan, and New York, and participation from 15 Indian Missions abroad. E-commerce platforms, including GeM, have listed ODOP items to enable wider procurement. Notably, the initiative now includes skilling tie-ups with institutions like the National Institute of Design (NID) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). A new experiential ODOP Centre using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) has also opened at Bharat Mandapam to promote public awareness and digital storytelling of district products.
