India's renewable energy (RE) market has been witnessing rapid growth in the last few years. According to New Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, "The Commercial & Industrial (C&I) segment of RE in India is expected to see the installation of more than six gigawatts of capacity by 2025". Sarangi believes that the C&I market in India alone will support up to 80 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity by 2030, driven by accelerating demand for renewable energy from the proliferation of data centres and expanding manufacturing operations. Sarangi reinforced that the C&I growth trend supports India's goal of increasing installed renewable energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030. He also alluded to distributed renewable energy systems growing at an unprecedented rate, with total additions from the PM-KUSUM and PM SURYA GHAR programs reporting approximately nine plant gigawatts installed as of this week, with projections to finish 2023 around 12 plant gigawatts.
The Indian economy is projected to rise above 6.5%, thereby promoting increased consumption of electrical power and increasing the growth of Renewable Energy Sources. The Government of India established a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) program to introduce Battery Storage into the energy industry at the Transmission and Distribution level to support this transition. The least-cost scenario for India indicates that 240 GWh of Battery Storage will be needed by 2047, underscoring the need to accelerate the development of Energy Storage Technologies. As part of the mission to achieve 65 GW of Solar Module Manufacturing by the end of June 2026, India will also support upstream manufacturing of Ingots and Polysilicon to enable enhanced C&I and Decentralised Renewable Energy (RE) deployment, release demand, and create a Clean Energy Ecosystem in India.
