December retail sales jump by 16% from pre-covid levels

As per the 35th edition of the Retail Business Survey conducted by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), retail sales in December 2022 registered a 16% increase as compared to the sales recorded in December 2019 (the pre-pandemic period).

The RAI surveyed retailers from different categories like apparel, home décor, beauty and personal care, food and grocery, etc., and covers both, large and mid-sized retailers pan-India.

The retailers in east India indicated a growth of 20% in sales as compared to the pre-pandemic years, while the retailers in South, West, and North India reported a growth of 18%, 16%, and 10%, respectively.

The footwear retailers reported a growth of 29% compared to sales levels in December 2019, which was followed by jewellery (26%) and sporting goods (25%). On the other hand, apparel retailers reported a 9% growth during the period while consumer durables retailers reported a growth of 6% in sales. Furthermore, the food and grocery retailers reported a 14% jump in business.
