India is witnessing a significant surge in the demand for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) skills, with global education platform Coursera recording over 2.6 million enrolments in GenAI-related courses in 2025, averaging one every 30 seconds. According to the Chief Content Officer at Coursera, Ms. Marni Baker Stein, India remains the platform’s second-largest market after the United States (US), with 29 million registered learners. Nearly 70% of learners are men, while 30% are women. Ms. Marni Stein noted that the number of women learners has increased by 290%. However, there remains scope to improve gender parity.
Coursera has partnered with 18 Indian universities, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) at Guwahati, Bombay, and Roorkee, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Calcutta, Indore, and Ahmedabad, and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani. For industry-focused learning, Coursera has collaborated with Fractal Analytics, which will offer 26 courses and five specialisations, including programmes on responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the GenAI era. Additionally, Coursera’s AI-powered feedback tool, Coach, has facilitated 3.7 million messages in India since its launch in September 2024, with over 4,00,000 active users. She added that learners interacting with the Coach are more likely to complete courses, particularly women and those with weaker academic backgrounds.
