Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, developing National Legal Metrology Portal (eMaap) for ensuring fair trade, consumer protection and a centralized database of all stakeholders

The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, is developing the National Legal Metrology Portal (eMaap) to integrate State Legal Metrology Departments into a unified national system. This initiative aims to streamline processes such as issuing licences, conducting verifications, and managing enforcement and compliance. By consolidating State portals into one, eMaap eliminates the need for stakeholders to register on multiple platforms, thereby enhancing transparency and fostering ease of doing business. The portal will also centralise data, improving enforcement activities and reducing administrative burdens for traders, manufacturers, packers, importers of packaged commodities, and repairers of weighing and measuring instruments.

A series of consultations have been held to shape the portal's development. The most recent meeting, held on November 28, 2024, involved key stakeholders, including industry associations like FICCI, CII, PHD, and ASSOCHAM, alongside representatives from State Legal Metrology Departments. The portal is designed to simplify critical procedures such as licence issuance, renewal, amendments, and verification of instruments, ensuring timely compliance with the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. eMaap will reduce paperwork and enhance efficiency, promoting manufacturing growth and ensuring accurate consumer trade instruments. The portal also supports governments with data-driven decision-making, streamlined enforcement, and improved regulatory frameworks, ultimately creating a transparent and accountable environment for all stakeholders.
