India’s Digi Yatra initiative has crossed a significant milestone by enabling more than 10 crore seamless passenger journeys, supported by over 2.4 crore app downloads across iOS and Android platforms. The biometric-based digital travel platform has emerged as one of the most successful innovations in global aviation, transforming passenger processing at airports through paperless and contactless travel. By replacing manual document verification with facial recognition technology, Digi Yatra has reduced average airport entry processing time from approximately 15 seconds to just five seconds per passenger, improving operational efficiency and reducing congestion at airport terminals. The initiative has also contributed to environmental sustainability by minimising the use of physical boarding passes and reducing paper consumption across participating airports. The milestone reflects growing passenger confidence in digital aviation services and aligns with India’s broader efforts to strengthen digital public infrastructure and enhance the travel experience through technology-driven solutions.
The platform is currently operational at 38 airports and is expected to expand to 65 airports by next year, with 27 additional airports set to be integrated into the network. Upcoming greenfield airports, including Navi Mumbai, Jewar and Bhogapuram, will also be fully Digi Yatra-enabled from the outset. The initiative supports the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s vision of accommodating rising passenger traffic, which has increased significantly over the past decade and is projected to reach 50 crore passengers by 2030 and nearly 100 crore by 2040. Digi Yatra also follows a privacy-by-design framework, with passenger data remaining encrypted and stored securely on users’ devices while being shared only for limited verification purposes. With support for 11 languages and plans to add 11 more regional languages by the end of the year, the platform is expected to become more inclusive and accessible, further strengthening India’s position as a global leader in digital aviation and smart mobility solutions.
