The Union Minister for Communications and Development of Northeast Region, Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, has stated that a robust "digital highway" is driving India's current economic transformation by providing the seamless exchange of content, business operations, and economic activity throughout the country, according to The Economic Times. He explained that digital connectivity is no longer merely a utility; rather, it has now become a key component of modern economies, comparable to the original transportation systems (i.e., road and rail) during the previous times of industrialization. In addition to enabling increased access to digital services through rapid growth of digital network infrastructure and mass-scale broadband penetration, resulting in near-ubiquitous connectivity, the rapid expansion of the digital network has enabled companies to grow more efficiently and effectively through innovation within regions.
Minister stated that the number of broadband subscribers in India increased dramatically over the last decade, increasing from approximately 60 million a decade ago to more than one billion currently, a demonstration of how quickly India is becoming digitalised. There has been a transformation of the digital ecosystem, including efforts to eliminate traditional barriers to entry and decrease reliance on international platforms, which ultimately aids domestic capacity building. In addition, an enhancement to the overall digital infrastructure has established new opportunities for entrepreneurship and allowed entrepreneurs the opportunity to connect with larger markets. The overall impact is that inclusive economic growth is being driven throughout urban and rural regions across India, and that digital connectivity and emerging technology must continue to be invested in to enable India to expand its leadership position within the global digital economy and to create an environment conducive to broad-based participation in the economy and sustainable economic growth.
