Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi marked the completion of 11 years of the Digital India programme, describing it as the foundation of a developed and self-reliant India that has transformed governance, empowered citizens and accelerated inclusive development. Launched on July 1, 2015, the flagship initiative has significantly enhanced the delivery of public services by making governance more transparent, efficient and accessible while positioning India as a global leader in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). The Prime Minister highlighted that Digital India has improved ease of living through seamless digital payments, transparent Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) and the widespread adoption of digital platforms across healthcare, education, agriculture, commerce and public service delivery. The initiative has also fostered innovation by enabling startups, entrepreneurs and innovators, particularly in villages and Tier-II and Tier-III cities, to develop technology-driven solutions for emerging challenges.
Over the past 11 years, Digital India has evolved into the backbone of India's digital economy through its nine foundational pillars, including Broadband Highways, Universal Mobile Connectivity, Public Internet Access, e-Governance, Electronic Service Delivery, Electronics Manufacturing, IT for Jobs and Information for All. India has emerged as the global leader in real-time digital payments, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounting for nearly 49% of the world's real-time digital transaction volume while expanding its international presence across multiple countries. Flagship digital platforms such as Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CoWIN, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), DIKSHA, UMANG, eSanjeevani, eHospital and eBloodBank have strengthened digital governance and improved access to essential services. Looking ahead, the Prime Minister emphasised that advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors and quantum computing will further strengthen innovation, economic growth and India's leadership in emerging technologies while ensuring that technology continues to serve citizens and support sustainable development.
