India's domestic air passenger traffic grew by 6.12% in 2024, reaching 161.3 million passengers, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This increase comes after a significant 23.36% YoY growth in 2023, driven by the post-pandemic recovery. InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo), India’s largest airline, continued its dominance, increasing its domestic market share from 60.5% in 2023 to 61.9% in 2024, carrying 99.9 million passengers. Meanwhile, SpiceJet saw its share decline from 5.5% to 3.7%, with six million passengers flown domestically.
The Air India Group, comprising Air India, Air India Express, and Vistara (which merged into Air India in November 2024), carried 45.8 million passengers in 2024, up from 39.49 million in 2023. The Group, which operates about 300 commercial planes, expects to expand its fleet to 400 planes within the next three years, supported by an order of 570 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. In terms of on-time performance, IndiGo led with 73.4% in December, followed by the Air India Group at 67.6%.
