India’s domestic defence production has increased significantly from Rs. 46,000 crore (US$ 7.54 billion) in 2014 to a record over Rs. 1,78,000 crore (US$ 20.42 billion) in FY25, highlighting the country’s growing manufacturing capabilities. Defence exports have also witnessed strong growth, rising from Rs. 1,000 crore (US$ 163.91 million) before 2014 to nearly Rs. 40,000 crore (US$ 4.24 billion), reflecting increasing global demand for indigenously manufactured defence equipment. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a 10,000-ton Aluminium Extrusion Press facility at Yantra India Limited’s Ordnance Factory in Nagpur, Union Defence Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of strengthening the domestic defence industrial base and enhancing self-reliance in critical technologies.

The statement further emphasised that while major defence platforms attract attention, smaller components play a crucial role in improving the performance and efficiency of defence systems. Additionally, the statement noted that the proposed Aluminium Extrusion Press will manufacture specialised aluminium alloy extrusions for defence, aerospace and strategic applications. Moreover, the statement outlined that the facility’s output will also support organisations such as Railways, ISRO and DRDO. It was further highlighted in the statement that the project, with a processing capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes of aluminium, will reduce import dependence and strengthen indigenous manufacturing. The statement also underscored that Yantra India Limited is expected to further enhance its position through sustained operational growth, while the new facility will reinforce Nagpur and the Vidarbha region as emerging hubs for defence manufacturing.
