DST Launches CCUS R&D Roadmap to Accelerate India’s Net-Zero Mission

The roadmap was launched by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood (Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India) and prepared by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to create a framework that enables coordinated National Action to accelerate the deployment of CCUS technology in India. Prof. Sood also stated that the roadmap will assist India by building its technological capabilities; encouraging investment; enhancing India's Global Leadership position in Climate Change; and contributing towards the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. As part of the Roadmap, DST Secretary Prof. Abhay Karandikar reiterated that India has significantly advanced its CCUS research efforts through International and National Collaborations, test beds, and Translational R&D. The roadmap is aligned with the RDI Scheme of Rs. 1 Lakh Crore (US$ 11.13 billion). It will boost the financial and technological support of the Private Sector's role in Industrial Decarbonisation.
CCUS initiatives were undertaken under the leadership of the DST (Department of Science and Technology) for almost 7 years, and they have benefited from input from a high-level task force. With its goal of achieving net zero by 2070, CCUS will play an essential role in helping hard-to-abate industries such as cement, power generation, and steelmaking reach their targets. CCUS will provide an essential means of decarbonising these industries. The DST has established three National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) to accelerate the development of CCUS technologies, as well as CCUS testing facilities, which are key enablers of innovation.
