According to Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, India has witnessed an unprecedented transformation over the last decade, with a nearly sixfold increase in production and an eightfold rise in exports over the last 11 years. Electronics production in the country grew from about Rs. 1.9 lakh crore (US$ 21.35 billion) in 2014-15 to over Rs. 11.3 lakh crore (US$ 127 billion) in 2024-25, while electronics exports jumped from around Rs. 38,000 crore (US$ 4.27 billion) to approximately Rs. 3.3 lakh crore (US$ 37.1 billion), reflecting the country's increasing integration into global supply chains. This growth is fueled by the expansion of manufacturing units, improved component production, and increased competitive participation by global companies. All these reasons combined make electronics one of the top three export categories for India. Growth in this sector has also been helped by policies like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing, through which huge investments were attracted and boosted domestic output.
The surge in electronics output has translated into employment and economic opportunities, with the industry now employing about 25 lakh people across the country. Major companies, including leading smartphone manufacturers and component producers, have expanded their footprint significantly, making India emerge as a major hub for devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and other hardware. The number of mobile manufacturing units has risen to more than 300 from just two units to represent a strategic shift towards self-reliance coupled with export-oriented production. And with four new plants of semiconductors starting commercial production this year, besides an expanding ecosystem on design, operating systems, and materials, India will be well-positioned to play a leading role in the global electronics sector over the coming years.
