Electronics Secretary Mr. S. Krishnan says India meets 99.2% of domestic mobile phone demand

India is manufacturing nearly 99.2% of its total domestic demand for mobile phones, according to Electronics and Information Technology Secretary, Mr. S. Krishnan. Addressing the inaugural session of the 13th Annual Public Affairs Forum of India 2026 in New Delhi, Mr. Krishnan said India manufactures around 32-33 crore mobile phones annually. The development highlights the expansion of domestic mobile phone manufacturing and the growing role of India as a production base for the global electronics industry. Five major global mobile phone brands have a presence in India and manufacture their devices in the country, supporting the expansion of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem and increasing local production capabilities.
The government has launched the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme to further scale up domestic production, increase domestic value addition and strengthen supply chain resilience. The scheme is also aimed at enhancing India’s competitiveness in the global mobile phone manufacturing industry. Rising domestic production has supported greater localisation of mobile phone manufacturing and reduced reliance on imports to meet domestic demand. The expansion of manufacturing capacity is also expected to create opportunities for deeper integration of components and suppliers within India’s electronics ecosystem. With annual production of around 32-33 crore mobile phones and nearly 99.2% of domestic demand being met through local manufacturing, India’s mobile phone industry has expanded its manufacturing base significantly. Continued policy support through the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme is expected to strengthen domestic capabilities, supply chains and India’s position in global electronics manufacturing.
