Rising demand from emerging and smaller cities, along with scalable solutions such as edge and containerised data centres, is set to drive India’s data centre infrastructure growth in the coming years, said Founder and Managing Director of NES Data, Mr. Umesh Sahay. Currently, Mumbai and Chennai account for approximately 70% of India’s total data centre capacity, but the future lies in expanding edge and containerised centres, particularly across tier two cities and remote areas.

Pune-based NES Data, a leading infrastructure-as-a-service provider specialising in colocation and Storage-as-a-Service, is developing several edge and containerised data centres expected to go live next month. He explained that these centres will democratise data access by offering low-latency, high-efficiency solutions tailored for India’s artificial intelligence (AI) driven digital ecosystem. Edge data centres, located closer to end-users, reduce latency and boost processing speeds, while containerised centres provide modular, plug-and-play scalability and flexibility, enabling deployment within weeks. With skyrocketing data storage requirements and a slowdown in hyperscale centre investments due to high costs, India is poised for substantial growth in these decentralised facilities, especially in cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Vizag, Lucknow, Patna, and Bhubaneswar. Studies indicate India’s data centre industry has grown 288 times over eight years to reach Rs. 10,259 crore (US$ 1.2 billion), with edge and containerised centres expected to constitute 25-30% of new data infrastructure by 2030.
