During his keynote address on World Standards Day in New Delhi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution & New and Renewable Energy, Mr. Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the critical role of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in ensuring access to safe, reliable, and high-quality products for every citizen in India. He emphasized that consumer well-being is inherently linked to the availability of quality goods, while the growth and profitability of industries depend on the demand for these products. Reflecting on Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's vision for India to be synonymous with global standards, He stressed the need for BIS to focus on quality as the nation’s economy expands and its role in global trade increases. He acknowledged BIS’s significant contributions, noting that over 22,300 standards are currently in force, with 94% harmonized with ISO and ISE standards.
In his address, he launched the BIS Care App 3.0, a platform designed to empower consumers by verifying the authenticity of BIS-certified products and facilitating complaints regarding sub-standard goods. He underscored the importance of enhancing public awareness about standards essential for consumer empowerment and safety. Additionally, he introduced a film promoting BIS’s standardization efforts and a Quality Quest Game to educate consumers on quality standards. The event also featured the release of reference handbooks and comic books to disseminate information about national standards, reinforcing the concept of “one nation, one standard” to ensure synergy among all stakeholders involved in the unified standards framework.
