Exhaust of 3,200 Litres of Diesel Replaced with Just Water Vapours: The Story of India's Hydrogen Train

India's first hydrogen-powered train has successfully completed over 1,200 km of seamless operations between Jind and Sonipat, marking a major milestone in the country's transition towards sustainable rail transport. Flagged off on July 17, 2026, the indigenously developed train has replaced the consumption of more than 3,200 litres of diesel, producing only water vapour as a by-product and eliminating tailpipe carbon emissions. Developed by Indian Railways, the 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train is equipped with two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars delivering a combined output of 2,400 kW, supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders. The project also includes Indian Railways' first dedicated hydrogen storage facility at Jind, capable of storing approximately 3,000 kg of green hydrogen at pressures of up to 500 bar, with dispensing at 350 bar. The train incorporates multiple safety systems, including leak, heat, flame and smoke detection, automatic shut-off mechanisms and continuous ventilation in line with international safety standards.

Following the successful completion of operations on the Jind-Sonipat route, Indian Railways is set to commence trials on the Delhi route, paving the way for wider adoption of hydrogen-powered rail mobility. The project represents a significant step in establishing an indigenous hydrogen rail ecosystem while strengthening India's clean energy and transport infrastructure. By replacing conventional diesel propulsion with hydrogen fuel cell technology, the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and support the country's long-term net-zero ambitions. The successful deployment of the hydrogen train also reinforces India's growing capabilities in developing advanced green mobility solutions, positioning the country as an emerging leader in sustainable railway technologies and innovation.
