Despite exceeding its Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) Budget projections for the last two fiscal years, the government may yet manage to save Rs. 80,000 crore (US$ 9.79 billion) this year. According to media sources, this is a result of states' tardy spending and underuse of funding.

The budgetary allocation for CSS has grown by 90.9% during the previous six fiscal years, from Rs. 2.31 lakh crore (US$ 28.29 billion) in FY17 to Rs. 4.4 lakh crore (US$ 53.89 billion) in FY23.

There are 49 major programmes that are sponsored by the federal government but are carried out by the states. These include, among others, the Swachh Bharat Mission, National Health Mission, National Rural Livelihood Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

This month, the Finance Ministry is anticipated to start estimating the revised budget for the current fiscal year.
