Exports of other cereals rise by 53.78% in November 2022

As the United Nations has declared 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets (IYOM)’, the authorities of India have been focusing on increasing the production and consumption of millets. Exports data has also revealed that the agricultural and food items (mainly other cereals) have been increasing at a faster rate. An increment of 53.78% was registered in the export of other types of cereals in November 2022.

As per the data by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the exports of tea, rice, cereals, tobacco, oil meal, oil seeds, fruits and vegetables, several types of finished grains, and processed items had witnessed growth in November, as compared to November last year.

Mr. Mohit Singla, Chairman, Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), stated that foreign buyers from more than 80 countries are coming this year to Indus Food Fair, which will be held on January 7-8, 2023, and is organised by TPCI, for export promotion of agricultural commodities. The agricultural exporters of India are expected to get huge orders worth US$ 1 billion at the fair.

India is one of the major producers of millet and most states grow one or more millet crop species. During the last five years, India produced more than 13.71-18 million tonnes of millet with the highest production in 2020-21. As per the estimates for 2021-22, about 16 million tonnes of millet have been produced in India. Bajra constitutes the highest market share of 9.62 million tonnes, which is followed by jowar, ragi and others with a production of 4.23 million tonnes, 1.70 million tonnes and 0.37 million tonnes, respectively.
