India’s express logistics and courier industry is expected to grow from Rs. 78,525 crore (US$ 9 billion) in FY25 to Rs. 1,57,050-191,950 crore (US$ 18-22 billion) by FY30, creating 6.57.5 million jobs, according to a report by the Express Industry Council of India (EICI) and Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG). The sector, which grew from Rs. 26,175 crore (US$ 3 billion) in FY17 to Rs. 78,525 crore (US$ 9 billion) in FY25 at a 12-15% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), is also projected to contribute Rs. 8,725-13,088 crore (US$ 1-1.5 billion) in goods and services tax (GST) revenues and Rs. 5,671 crore (US$ 650 million) in customs duty. Domestic express forms 70% of the market, valued at Rs. 54,968-56,713 crore (US$ 6.3-6.5 billion), driven by surface transport, while international express is gaining momentum with rising global demand for Made-in-India products. The report identifies agility, efficiency, customer centricity, sustainability, and policy support as key drivers, alongside initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti, the National Logistics Policy, and Bharatmala Pariyojna.
The express industry has evolved from being a logistics facilitator to an essential service, particularly during COVID-19, when it enabled the world’s largest vaccination drive and delivery of essential goods. Growth is now supported by booming e-commerce, higher MSME output, and expanding infrastructure in tier-II and tier-III cities. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari, while releasing the report in New Delhi, underlined its importance in connecting businesses and markets. CEO, EICI, Mr. Vijay Kumar, highlighted the sector’s resilience and innovation, while the Partner at KPMG India, Mr. Girish Nair, noted its rapid expansion across air, road, rail, and coastal networks to meet rising demand.
