Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics and IT, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that the first 'Made in India' chip will be rolled out this year, ahead of its scheduled launch in December 2024. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he expressed confidence in India's semiconductor program, noting strong support from industry stakeholders. He highlighted the need for advancements in purity levels for semiconductor materials. He stated that the industry is working to achieve transformative changes to meet these requirements.
India's semiconductor ambitions were significantly bolstered by the approval of the Semicon India program in December 2021, which has a total outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore (US$ 8.79 billion) to develop a semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem. The government has also established the India Semiconductor Mission to drive long-term strategies in this sector. Furthermore, India is attracting substantial foreign investments, with companies like NXP Semiconductors planning to invest over Rs. 8,644 crore (US$ 1 billion) in Research and Development and Micron Technology setting up a Rs. 23,771 crore (US$ 2.75 billion) assembly and testing plant in Gujarat. According to a Reuters report, India’s semiconductor market will reach Rs. 5,44,572 crore (US$ 63 billion) by 2026.
