Fish production has increased to 197.75 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25 from 95.79 lakh tonnes fish production in FY 2013-14, increasing by a significant 106%.

As per the Press Information Bureau report, total fish output in India rose from 95.79 lakh tonnes during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 (FY13-14) to 197.75 lakh tonnes during FY24-25 (projected). This represents an increase of approximately 106% over the last decade. In addition to increasing fish production, this reflects the significant investment made by the Government of India (GOI) through policies and other investment initiatives aimed at developing the fisheries sector. The expansion of aquaculture capabilities and greater support to fishermen and women will help ensure that the fisheries sector continues to thrive.
Fish production has increased significantly, which shows that the role of fisheries is increasing in terms of value added to agriculture, the livelihoods of farming communities, and food security. Increased productivity, the use of more modern techniques, and greater emphasis on developing inland and marine fisheries are all contributing to this growth. The growth in fish production is consistent with the Government of India’s efforts to increase the value chain associated with fisheries, develop more sustainable fishing practices, and increase income-generating opportunities for those involved in both marine and inland fisheries. An upward trend in the volume of fish produced makes fisheries a major contributor to the agricultural economy and related sectors.
