Flipkart to add 8 lakh sq ft warehousing space to strengthen grocery infrastructure

On Tuesday, Flipkart, (owned by Walmart) announced its plan to expand its grocery fulfilment centre range by more than 8 lakh sq. ft > the next three months in Delhi, Kolkata, and other cities.

According to a statement, the increased fulfilment centre capacity would allow Flipkart to fulfil > 73,000 grocery orders per day.

The statement said, “Over the next three months, Flipkart aims to expand its grocery supply chain infrastructure by adding over 8 lakh sq. ft of space through five new fulfilment centres.”

As per the statement, the marketplace would offer the convenience of online grocery shopping to more consumers around the country with this additional infrastructure.

Flipkart Grocery has over 7,000 items in over 200 categories, including everyday necessities, groceries, snacks and drinks, confectionery, and personal care.

Flipkart claims that its new grocery fulfilment centre network, which covers outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, serves nearly 64,000 orders every day.

Fulfilment centres, unlike conventional warehouses, are equipped with fully automated pick, pack, and shipping processes to ensure that orders are processed safely and on time.

Flipkart Vice President - Grocery Ms. Smrithi Ravichandran said, “E-commerce has emerged as a secure way of making transactions in these trying times. The Flipkart group places a high value on consumer safety, and our new grocery supply chain infrastructure will allow us to reach more customers in the country who can purchase daily necessities with ease and receive contactless delivery.”

She added, “The company works closely with brand and marketplace companies to ensure stock availability around the world.”

Flipkart announced last month that its hyperlocal service Flipkart Fast will be expanding to six new cities—Delhi, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Noida, Hyderabad, and Pune—to enable customers to order everyday necessities like fruits and vegetables and have them delivered within 90 minutes.
