Since its launch on August 9, 2016, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has emerged as a key pillar of India’s digital governance framework, transforming public procurement through a transparent and technology-driven ecosystem. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, procurement worth more than Rs. 8.69 lakh crore (US$ 95.6 billion) has been sourced from micro and small enterprises (MSEs) through the platform. During the same period, the number of registered MSEs on GeM expanded from 2,396 to more than 11.9 lakh, while orders placed through the portal increased from 2,994 to over 2.17 crore. By enabling online onboarding, transparent bidding, digital contract management and end-to-end procurement processes, GeM has broadened access to government procurement opportunities and strengthened participation across India’s business ecosystem.

The platform has played a significant role in promoting inclusive economic growth by expanding opportunities for women-led enterprises, startups and SC/ST-owned MSEs. Registered women-owned MSEs increased from 268 in 2016-17 to more than 2.16 lakh, with procurement value rising from Rs. 8 crore (US$ 1.19 million) to over Rs. 93,327 crore (US$ 10.05 billion). Startup participation grew from 88 entities to more than 40,000, generating procurement worth over Rs. 61,400 crore (US$ 6.62 billion), while procurement from SC/ST MSEs exceeded Rs. 21,800 crore (US$ 2.35 billion). GeM has also supported large-scale public service delivery, including procurement of over 324 crore vaccine doses and 199 crore syringes. Leveraging artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and digital monitoring tools, the platform continues to enhance efficiency, accountability and transparency in public procurement across India.
