Gen Z, millennials prioritise learning, growth in career choices: Survey

The 2025 Deloitte Global Gen Z and Millennial Survey, which includes responses from 809 Indian professionals (505 Gen Zs and 304 millennials), has revealed that career progression and learning opportunities are among the top factors influencing job decisions for India's young workforce. Over 94% of Gen Zs and 97% of millennials value hands-on experience over theory. The survey also highlights a mentorship shortfall, with around half of respondents seeking active mentorship from managers but far fewer receiving it. Additionally, 52% of Gen Zs and 45% of millennials are dissatisfied with the quality of higher education. In comparison, 36% and 40% have cost concerns. Furthermore, 33% of Gen Zs and 29% of millennials in India feel stressed or anxious most of the time, with over 36% of Gen Zs and 39% of millennials attributing their job as a significant factor contributing to their anxiety or stress.
Chief Happiness Officer at Deloitte India, Ms. Saraswathi Kasturirangan, emphasised that organisations must prioritise employee happiness and well-being, addressing physical, mental, and financial well-being in tandem at the highest levels of leadership. The survey underscores the need for employers to build cultures anchored in growth, innovation, and continuous learning to meet the evolving expectations of the young workforce in the age of automation and GenAI.
