Assam has marked a historic milestone in its agricultural export journey with the maiden shipment of Geographical Indication (GI), tagged Karbi Anglong ginger to London, a first for the state’s farm produce. The Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, described this achievement as a proud and significant moment for the farmers of Karbi Anglong and the wider agricultural community. In a post on social media, the statement underscored that the successful export reflects growing global recognition of Assam’s high-quality produce and the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen livelihoods through enhanced market access. A consignment of 21.2 metric tonnes of premium fresh ginger sourced directly from farmers in Karbi Anglong district was flagged off from Krishi Bhawan in Guwahati, representing the first time this GI-tagged spice has entered the UK market.
The initiative was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with NextOn Foods Private Limited, with senior agriculture officials and departmental representatives present at the flag-off ceremony. Agriculture Minister Mr. Atul Bora highlighted that the export paves the way for Assam’s growers to step onto a global stage, enhancing value, visibility, and international market linkages for Brand Assam products. The Chief Minister, Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promote GI-tagged commodities, boost exports, and make Assam’s agriculture globally competitive, potentially opening further opportunities for farmers and producer groups in international markets.
