Global fintech investment tops $210 bn in 2021, India shines: Report

Global fintech funding (including M&A and PE/VC funding) crossed US$ 210 billion with a record 5,684 deals in 2021, up from US$ 125 billion across 3,674 deals in 2020, according to the 'Pulse of Fintech H2'21' report by KPMG.

India made waves on the global stage once again, with four of the top ten fintech deals in the Asia-Pacific region coming from the country.
Here are a few highlights from the report:

  • Investment in the payments sector increased to US$ 51.7 billion in 2021, up from US$ 29.1 billion in 2020.
  • Investment in blockchain and crypto increased to US$ 30.2 billion in 2021, up from US$ 5.5 billion in 2020.
  • Investment in cybersecurity (US$ 4.85 billion) and wealthtech (US$ 1.62 billion) also reached new highs.
  • The value of cross-border fintech M&A deals increased by more than threefold YoY, to US$ 36.2 billion.
  • The total value of fintech-related M&As increased from US$ 76 billion in 2020 to US$ 83.1 billion in 2021.
  •  Fintech VC funding has more than doubled from its previous high, with US$ 12.2 billion invested in 2021 compared to US$ 5.2 billion in 2018.
  • VC investment in fintech has more than doubled in the last year, rising from US$ 46 billion in 2020 to a new high of US$ 115 billion in 2021.
  • Fintech investment in the Asia-Pacific area than doubled between 2020 and 2021, rising from US$ 14.7 billion to US$ 27.5 billion.
