The Northeastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), under the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (MDoNER), launched ‘Padma Doree’, a unique cross-regional textile initiative that brings together the Eri (Ahimsa) silk traditions of Northeast India with the renowned Chanderi weaving heritage of Madhya Pradesh. The initiative was unveiled by Secretary MDoNER Mr. Sanjay Jaju, highlighting the vision of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. ‘Padma Doree’ blends ethical silk production with fine Chanderi craftsmanship, creating a fusion that promotes sustainability, innovation and cultural integration. Union Minister Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia’s leadership was also acknowledged in bringing the initiative to completion.
The launch featured a fashion showcase and a three-day interactive exhibition, offering visitors an immersive experience into textile development and artisan collaboration. Artisans from both regions are actively participating through live demonstrations, enabling audiences to understand the journey from fibre to fabric. The initiative also integrates regional culinary experiences, reflecting the broader cultural richness of the participating states. According to NEHHDC Managing Director Mr. Mara Kocho, the initiative aims to build a sustainable, artisan-centric textile ecosystem by merging diverse traditions. The presence of filmmaker Mr. Muzaffar Ali and other dignitaries further underscored its cultural significance. Positioned within the larger narrative of indigenous knowledge systems and sustainable luxury, ‘Padma Doree’ reinforces the relevance of traditional crafts in contemporary markets.
