The government has implemented an advanced monitoring system to strengthen regulatory oversight of retail fuel outlets, as outlined in a Parliamentary report tabled on Monday. The system integrates cutting-edge technologies such as OTP-based calibration, magnetic self-destructive pulsers, and digital payment systems, enabling real-time data analytics across the nation's fuel distribution network. The monitoring mechanism, developed under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, is designed to enhance consumer protection and ensure a fair, transparent marketplace. It has been expanded nationwide, with a particular focus on high-risk areas.

The monitoring framework is a joint effort between the Legal Metrology departments and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at both state and central government levels. It follows the recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, which called for a time-bound plan for comprehensive monitoring of retail fuel outlets. The system ensures precision in fuel dispensing, data integrity, and real-time transaction monitoring. Regular assessments will track milestones, identify challenges, and implement corrective actions to maintain regulatory compliance and safeguard consumer interests.
